Class of 2008 - 5 Year Reunion
On Friday 31 May the class of 2008 met in the Pavilion for our 5 year reunion. We had an excellent turn out with 80 people attending. It was fantastic to catch up with people who we might not have seen for the whole 5 years. Some that finished year 12, others who were at Peninsula at some point during our education. There were so many diverse paths that people had taken, some having finished university, others in their final years or in established careers. Many still travelling, some with mortgages, and a scattering of engagements and babies. Check out the next page for updates on individuals. It was great to catch up with the fabulous Neil Heron, our fond head of year and of course remember Martin Dunsmore. We were also thrilled to have Marg Hopkins, Sharyn Curtis, Heather Evans, Blair Cooper, Muriel Bakker and Keith Maughan to celebrate this occasion with us. I’d like to say a huge thank you to Suzanne Ashley, the staff of the Pavilion and TOPSA for yet another great reunion. Look forward to seeing you all at the 10 year reunion. Saturday 25 May, and the gathering of the Class of 83 (and some eminent 82’s), for our thirty year reunion was a night to remember. For some of us, it was the first time since the Year Australia won the America’s Cup that we had got together “en masse” to reminisce about the ‘good old times’. I had to admit to being a bit nervous…would our “47 year” eyesight be up to the challenge of facial recognition of our mate and/or had the trials and tribulations of our respective lives altered us beyond expectation? The risk of mistaken identity was thankfully averted as everyone sported a big and bright name tag (thank heavens and thanks to Suzanne Ashley). And if truth be told, everyone actually looked remarkably the same. Of course, we’d all amassed a few kilos and some of us had lost more hair than others. But overall, there was no mistaking who we were, and how vivid our shared Peninsula School history was in our minds, 30 years on! Perhaps the ones who had least aged were our venerable teachers who welcomed us to the party: Ray Gurry, Rick Grimley, Ralph Marrison, Daryl Neal, Neil Taylor, Neil Chapple and of course the John and Wendy Leaver dynamo. Sadly, Harry Macdonald was unable to participate due to a recent illness and we wished him a speedy recovery. All the returnees were impressed at the collective capacity of our mentors at having survived (and perhaps flourished) despite our best efforts to wear them all down in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Who could forget those Science experiments where the budding Einstein’s amongst us strived to make our own big bang; or our unauthorised but creative teamwork in filling out those pesky punch cards in those memorable days before laptops were de rigour! Whilst eating our canapés and downing a beer or two, we had brief glimpses of where our paths from 1983 had allowed us to go. Some had remained sensibly anchored on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula (no more prominent an example of course being our local Federal Member, Greg Hunt MP). Others had been enticed to those greener but distant pastures whether in Melbourne, interstate, and even in a few cases, overseas (and a special well done to Swiss based IT/legal expert Simon Flowers for finessing his attendance at the big reunion!). Perhaps the most common theme was the shared experience of raising a family and the delicious irony of us railing against our kids in the same way that we must have railed against our parents and teachers, some 30 years ago! So roll on the next reunion and well done to a super effort from the organising committee, in particular Scott Webster for making it possible, the indefatigable Suzanne Ashley for her administrative support, the staff alumni who so graciously attended, and of course, all of us from 1982-83 either in attendance or who would have been there if mountains could have been moved!
